Region: Rheinhessen, Mosel, Germany

Varietal: 100% Dornfelder

Tasting Notes: Deep red color. Bouquet of black cherries. Deliciously fruity (with a small dose of residual sugar) red wine at only 10.5% alcohol. Easy to like wine for casual sipping especially for those who enjoy lighter reds with some fruitiness. A good partner with pizza, tomato-based pasta dishes, marinated, grilled vegetables and meats.

Producer: The Selbach family has been producing wine in the Mosel region of Germany for more than 400 years, making it one of the oldest and most respected winemaking families in the area. Known for their devotion to traditional methods, Selbach emphasizes terroir-driven wines, with a particular focus on showcasing the unique minerality of the Mosel’s steep, slate-laden slopes. Though primarily recognized for their Rieslings, Selbach has also expanded to include a select range of red wines, such as their Dornfelder, which reflects the winery’s dedication to both tradition and innovation. The 2018 Dornfelder is a fine example of Selbach’s ability to work with lesser-known varietals, bringing a fresh perspective to a grape that is often overshadowed by its white counterparts in the Mosel.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The Dornfelder grapes for Selbach’s 2018 vintage come from carefully tended vineyards within the Mosel region, known for its cool climate and slate soils that impart a distinct minerality and vibrancy to the wines. Selbach employs sustainable vineyard practices, nurturing the natural ecosystem while enhancing the expressive potential of each grape variety. The 2018 Dornfelder is fermented in stainless steel to preserve its fresh fruit character, allowing the natural ripeness of the vintage to shine. The result is a red wine that is both approachable and layered, reflecting the finesse and dedication of Selbach’s winemaking team. This vintage offers a unique glimpse into Selbach’s commitment to quality and the unexpected versatility of Mosel terroir.
