Region: Tuscany, Italy

Varietal: Mostly Sangiovese with some Ciliegiolo

Tasting Notes: Morellino is the name for Sangiovese in the Maremma area of coastal Tuscany. Morellino di Scansano is the best-known Sangiovese-based denomination in this maritime-influenced region, producing a wine that is similar to Chianti and Vino Nobile in its blend, but grown under markedly different conditions. A fresh, tangy red, this offers sour cherry, strawberry, almond and earth flavors. Succulent and balanced, with a moderately long finish.

Producer: Poliziano, founded in 1961 by Dino Carletti, sits on the scenic slopes below Montepulciano. Originally 55 acres, the estate has grown to over 500 acres, driven by Dino’s son, Federico, who returned to the family business in 1980 after earning a degree in agriculture. Federico’s passion for both winemaking and local heritage is reflected in the estate’s name, honoring the famous Renaissance poet Angelo Ambrogini, known as Il Poliziano. Today, Poliziano is a major player in the world of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, known for crafting some of the region’s most prestigious wines.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The vineyards of Poliziano are meticulously cared for, with each parcel carefully selected based on soil and climate conditions. Federico Carletti believes that great wines are born in the vineyard, and this philosophy is evident in every aspect of his winemaking process. The Lohsa vineyards, located in Maremma, are home to the estate’s Morellino di Scansano wines, primarily made from Sangiovese with a touch of Ciliegiolo. With state-of-the-art facilities and a deep respect for the land, Poliziano combines traditional methods with modern techniques to create wines that truly reflect their terroir.
