Region: Tuscany, Italy

Varietal: 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: Savory aromas of balsamic vinegar and mushroom mingle with dark chocolate, black cherry and wild fennel on the nose, with tar and graphite emerging at last before the palate offers more cherries and chocolate against pliable tannins.

Producer: Petrolo, a distinguished estate in Tuscany's Val d'Arno di Sopra region, has a rich history of producing exceptional wines that embody the area's unique terroir. The estate's commitment to quality and tradition is exemplified by its flagship wine, Torrione, first introduced in 1988. Torrione represents the culmination of Petrolo's dedication to viticultural excellence, blending Sangiovese with Bordeaux varieties—a practice rooted in the region's history—to create a wine that reflects both innovation and heritage.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2020 Torrione is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Petrolo's meticulously managed vineyards, including the historic Bòggina vineyard planted in 1947. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo natural fermentation with native yeasts in concrete vats, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wood. The wine matures for 15 to 18 months in a combination of concrete tanks, large French oak barrels, tonneaux, and barriques, allowing for a harmonious integration of flavors and a balanced expression of the estate's terroir.
