Tasting Notes: The 2019 ‘Readers’ Merlot is a vibrant garnet with enticing aromas of black plum, cherry, violets, and a touch of spice. On the palate, juicy blackberry and plum mingle with savory herbs and sweetly spiced oak. Bright acidity and silky tannins create a smooth, balanced texture, leading to a long, slightly grippy finish.
Producer: J. Bookwalter Winery's legacy is deeply rooted in American agriculture, with ten generations of the Bookwalter family dedicated to farming. In 1976, Jerry Bookwalter transitioned the family into viticulture, playing a pivotal role in establishing Washington State's wine industry by managing the development of renowned vineyards such as Sagemoor, Bacchus, and Dionysus. In 1982, he founded J. Bookwalter Winery, leveraging his extensive vineyard expertise. His son, John Bookwalter, returned to the family business in 1997 after a successful career in sales and marketing, ushering in a new era of innovation and growth for the winery.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2019 'Readers' Merlot is crafted from grapes sourced primarily from the esteemed Conner Lee Vineyard, managed by Jerry Bookwalter during his career. This vineyard, known for its consistent quality and expression of Washington's terroir, provides the ideal conditions for cultivating Merlot. Under the guidance of Director of Winemaking & Viticulture, Cameron Parry, the winery employs meticulous winemaking techniques to enhance the fruit's natural character. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks preserves the vibrant fruit flavors, while aging in a combination of French and American oak barrels imparts subtle spice and complexity, resulting in a well-balanced and approachable Merlot.
