Region: Chénas, Beaujolais, France
Varietal: 100% Gamay
Tasting Notes: The 2022 ‘La Vigne de Mon Père’ is a classic Moulin-à-Vent, showcasing both power and finesse. Dark, inky fruits mingle with stony minerality and a refined, perfumed nuance. The structured tannins have a granular grip, giving the wine a sense of muscularity while maintaining impressive balance. Black and red fruits are layered with savory, almost Burgundian depth, accented by notes of black and green peppercorn, tobacco, and dried herbs. The concentration, reflecting the hot and dry vintage, is intense yet never heavy, chiseling down to a lingering finish with hints of bitter licorice. Already a compelling match for a hearty meal, this wine will also reward cellaring for 4-6 years as its complexity continues to evolve.
Producer: Elisa Guérin is a rising star in the Beaujolais region, bringing a fresh perspective to the esteemed vineyards of Moulin-à-Vent. With a background in agronomy, Elisa took the helm of her family's 4-hectare estate, which had been in the family since the early 1900s, and initiated a transition to organic viticulture. Her approach marries respect for tradition with innovative practices, aiming to showcase the true potential of the Gamay grape. Her wines, such as 'La Vigne de Mon Père', have quickly garnered attention for their depth and elegance, reflecting both the rich history and dynamic future of the region.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2022 'La Vigne de Mon Père' is crafted from 100% Gamay grapes sourced from family plots undergoing organic conversion. The vines, aged between 30 and 50 years, are planted in loamy granite soils interspersed with limestone and quartz, contributing to the wine's distinctive minerality. Elisa employs semi-carbonic maceration of whole clusters with native yeasts in 54hL concrete tanks, a technique that enhances the wine's aromatic profile while preserving its freshness. Fermentation involves gentle pump-overs every other day and a single careful punchdown, ensuring delicate extraction of flavors and tannins. The wine is aged for nine months in concrete tanks, unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulfur addition, resulting in a pure expression of the terroir.
