Region: Minervois, Languedoc, France
Varietal: Syrah, Carignan
Tasting Notes: This is the flagship wine of the estate, crafted with the structure and depth to age gracefully. The grapes are harvested at slight surmaturité, capturing the intense aromatics and flavors of the surrounding hillside garrigue. With time in the bottle, the wine develops complex notes of juniper, rosemary, and thyme, alongside savory wild berry flavors and a subtle, earthy nuance. A remarkable expression of its terroir, this wine remains one of the most compelling values in France.
Producer: Château Massiac, with a history dating back to Roman times, is a renowned estate in the Languedoc region of southern France. Located between the villages of Azille and Rieux Minervois, the domaine spans 21.5 hectares and has been under the stewardship of the Boudouresques family for generations. Since converting to organic viticulture in 2012, the estate has focused on producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Minervois. The combination of limestone-rich soils, Mediterranean influences, and cooling northwestern winds allows Château Massiac to craft wines that honor both the traditions of the region and the potential for modern refinement.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The vineyards of Château Massiac are planted primarily to Syrah and Carignan, varieties well-suited to the warm, dry climate of Minervois. The estate practices low-intervention farming, ensuring that the character of the land is fully expressed in each vintage. After careful hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo fermentation in concrete vats, with a cuvaison period of two to four weeks. Techniques such as pump-overs and rack-and-returns are used to achieve balanced extraction and structure. The result is a wine that captures the power and rustic elegance of the region, shaped by both its historical roots and thoughtful winemaking practices.
