Region: Sicily, Italy
Varietal: 100% Frappato
Tasting Notes: The 2022 Barone di Bernaj Frappato offers a vibrant bouquet of fresh cherries, complemented by subtle notes of balsamic and black pepper. On the palate, it is clean and refreshing, with lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. The wine's bright red fruit flavors are accented by hints of fresh herbs and a touch of minerality, leading to a crisp, satisfying finish. This Frappato is particularly enjoyable when served slightly chilled, making it an excellent companion for light appetizers, cheeses, and charcuterie.
Producer: Cantine Madaudo, established in 1945 by Rosario Madaudo's great-grandfather in Villafranca Tirrena, Sicily, has evolved from a modest family farm into a notable estate under the 'Barone di Bernaj' label. Now in its fourth generation, the winery is managed by Rosario alongside his father, Alfio, and uncle, Andrea, with contributions from his brother and cousins. This family collaboration has propelled Cantine Madaudo to prominence, with vineyards in Sambuca di Sicilia and on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, reflecting a deep commitment to Sicily's rich viticultural heritage.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2022 Barone di Bernaj Frappato is crafted from organically grown grapes situated just outside the Etna DOC, sharing the region's warm climate and volcanic soils. This terroir imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine. The Frappato grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve their vibrant character. The resulting wine exhibits intense aromatics of berries with hints of fresh fruit, offering a clean and refreshing palate. This Frappato pairs well with cheeses, cold cuts, and a variety of appetizers, making it versatile for various culinary pairings.
