Region: Marche, Italy
Varietal: 100% Verdicchio
Tasting Notes: "Le Vaglie" was introduced in 1992 with a dual purpose: to break away from the traditional mold of Verdicchio while honoring the winemaking heritage of the Marche region. This innovative approach proved successful, resulting in a wine that retains the classic almond aromas and flavors of Verdicchio, yet stands out with its intriguing complexity and refreshing vibrancy. Nuances of young peach and pear are complemented by hints of chamomile. It washes across the palate with saline intensity and tart orchard fruits, creating a tense yet also juicy sensation.
Producer: Stefano Antonucci’s journey from banker to winemaker is a testament to his deep-rooted connection to his origins and his relentless pursuit of passion. Raised in the quaint town of Barbara in the Marche region, Stefano's upbringing in a family that ran a bakery and a school instilled in him a strong work ethic and a love for his homeland. In 1994, driven by a profound enthusiasm for wine that had simmered since his youth, he left his banking career to transform his family’s modest cooperative winery into the esteemed Santa Barbara Winery. This bold move was fueled by a desire to innovate while honoring his familial and regional heritage, an ambition he pursued with his father’s cautious yet supportive eye.
Vineyard & Winemaking: At Santa Barbara Winery, Stefano has blended traditional practices with modern innovation to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Marche region. The estate's vineyards, ranging from 25 to 40 years old, span 45 hectares and feature a diverse mix of soils from clay to gravel, influenced by their proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines. The winemaking process is meticulous, with hand-tended vines, modern equipment, and aging in traditional French oak barrels housed in an old monastery. This careful balance between respect for tradition and a commitment to innovation allows Stefano to craft wines with distinct personality and elegance, capturing both local heritage and international appeal.
