Region: Santa Barbara, Central Coast, California
Varietal: 100% Syrah
Tasting Notes: The wine is fresh, lively, and loaded with flavors of blackberries, dried herbs, bacon fat and lavender. Old World inspired, but made with New World fruit.
Producer: Matt Murphy, the co-founder and president of Presqu’ile winery, believes the best wineries are those run by families over multiple generations. His own family is a prime example of this, as they share a tight-knit bond and a love for working together. Matt’s sister Anna, the family’s talented enologist, has been part of this winemaking journey since their days growing up on the family farm in Louisiana. Dieter Cronje, the esteemed winemaker at Presqu’ile, brings a wealth of experience to the table. His quest for a global perspective led him to an exchange program at the University of Bordeaux and extensive travels through Burgundy and Champagne, deepening his knowledge of Pinot Noir. After collaborating with Matt at Ambullneo winery and bonding over countless late-night Burgundy tastings, it became clear that Dieter and Matt made a great team. That’s when Matt knew Dieter was the perfect choice to join the Presqu’ile family as their winemaker.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The Santa Barbara County Syrah is a bold expression of the region’s character, crafted from 100% destemmed Syrah grapes. This wine spends a generous 18 months aging in barrels, blending its flavors to perfection. It’s primarily sourced from the Whitehawk Vineyard (95%) with a splash from the Full Circle Vineyard (5%). Harvested between late September and mid-October 2022, the Syrah thrives in sandy loam soil and is nurtured through sustainable and organic farming practices.
