Region: Calatayud, Spain

Varietal: Mostly Garnacha

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Breca El Nacido comes from higher elevation vineyards and is just about all Garnacha, co-fermented with a kiss of white varieties, that's raised in a mix of tank and barrel. Ripe black cherries, black raspberries, peppery herbs, crushed stone, and violet notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a rare mix of richness and freshness.

Producer: Bodegas Breca, founded by Jorge Ordóñez in 2010, is dedicated to producing the finest Garnacha from the birthplace of the grape: Aragón. Garnacha, first cultivated in this region in the 7th century, spread across Europe thanks to the medieval Kingdom of Aragón. The winery is located in Munébrega, within D.O. Calatayud, Spain’s highest altitude region for Garnacha production. These extreme altitudes and drastic temperature swings—up to 60°F in summer—give the wines a unique depth, vibrancy, and lively acidity. Breca’s El Nacido 2022 is the freshest expression of these old mountain vineyards, capturing the essence of this ancient grape in a bold, modern wine.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The vineyards of Bodegas Breca, planted between 1900 and 1975, are dry-farmed and head-trained, embracing traditional viticulture with a practicing organic approach. The vines thrive in diverse, slate-dominated soils and endure a hot, dry climate with cold nights, creating perfect conditions for Garnacha to ripen fully while maintaining high acidity. What sets Bodegas Breca apart is the dedication to preserving the ancient Garnacha de Aragón clone, one of the oldest and most untouched in the world. This focus on heritage, along with the extreme climate and diverse soils, results in wines with exceptional balance, depth, and the potential for long aging.
